Brazilian legal research, with the source at hand.

IAJUS brings together case law, legislation and open-access legal scholarship. Find relevant material, read the supporting sources and research through your AI assistant or the IAJUS web portal.

Legal documents and research interfaces remain in Portuguese. Setup, coverage and access pages linked below are also in Portuguese.

01 Legal sources

Know where the material comes from

Court decisions and legislation are collected directly from the public institutions that publish them. IAJUS records provenance and removes duplicate records. Source links let you check the original material whenever available.

Case law and precedents

Research decisions from Brazilian courts and qualified precedents, including súmulas, general repercussion rulings and repetitive-case rulings. The case-law collection focuses on decisions issued by panels, chambers and plenary courts.

Legislation

Consult federal, state and municipal legislation from official sources, including the Planalto portal, legislative assemblies and official gazettes.

Legal scholarship

Read open-access legal scholarship with the publication reference preserved. Use it alongside legislation and case law to understand the legal question in context.

02 Search methods

Start with a question, a phrase or an area of law

Different research questions call for different ways of searching. IAJUS combines text-based search with a legal classification aligned with the Brazilian National Council of Justice taxonomy.

Semantic search

Describe the matter in your own words to find decisions on the same issue, even when the court uses different wording.

Hybrid search

The default search combines meaning, full text, approximate text matching, case numbers and areas of law, then merges the ranked results.

Keywords and filters

Search for a specific expression in Portuguese or narrow the collection by court, year, reporting judge, area of law or type of legislation.

Areas of law and citation links

Browse from a branch of law to a subarea and subject. Citation links between decisions offer another way to trace precedents; this search method is still experimental.

A source behind the answer

IAJUS searches its collection and answers from the material it finds, with links to the supporting decisions. When it does not find a result, the answer says so. Read the original text before relying on a citation.
